Right now in the Pacific Northwest of US of A sunshine is a rare commodity even as the first day of summer—the summer solstice-- comes up. When the summer sun shines in this part of the world people go bonkers—shirts off, skimpy dresses abound and the sellers of shorts are laughing all the way to the bank. Is there any wonder our ancestors across the globe adored the sun and gave it deity status?
To the Greeks there was Apollo (sometimes known as Titan or Helios), the Sun god, who brought life-giving heat and light to Earth. He is the patron god of musicians and poets, and he carries a lyre and his symbol represents the “egg of creation”. (http://www.wordsources.info/apollo.html). The Germanic tribes had Sol. The Afrikan Munsh people had the Supreme Awondo.
The sun brings life. Photosynthesis makes plants grow bringing leaves, fruits, flowers and grains from which animals, including humans, feed and sustain life. Vitamin D a vital element for bone growth can be derived naturally from the sun.

This year I fancied giving some colour to the old house. I bought some flower seeds, dug up some soil in the front yard, and threw them seeds in. Within a week some young seedlings were vigorously finding their way out of the soil. Like an excited child I checked their progress as I watered them religioulsy. It is late, but I am looking forward to the flower bloom as the sun pours its blessing. What a wonder!
Man can capture this energy that occurs naturally for its own purpose. The sun rays can be captured to generate electricity thereby reducing the need to dam rivers for hydro-electricity with sometimes attendant negative environmental consequences. Thus solar panel is now a power source for torches, street lights, water-heating, water-pumping, battery charging, etc. The heat created by the sun can cause variations in atmospheric pressures thereby creating wind currents that again can be harnessed to produce electricity.
O Sun, you are indeed almighty. In our modern day rational minds we still can respect you and harness you for our benefit just as our ancestors found meaning and strength through you.
